The Pratical Use of Your Voice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love to tell my clients that I don't give homework. The last thing I want is for them to set aside time to practice voice. In that sense there is no homework. (Yes, I do ask them to do some breathing exercises in the car on their way to work or while they're standing in line, climbing steps, ironing a shirt, or emptying the dishwasher.)
Instead, I explain that their homework is to use their 'real' or 'new' voice every time they open their mouth to speak. The more often this happens, the sooner the 'new' voice becomes a habit.
In Eric's case, I was amazed that he was able to hold the 'new' voice in conversation so quickly. Because I'm realistic, I suggest that they shoot for a percentage in using that 'new' sound, especially during the 1st week. For example, if they can remember to use their 'new' voice 35% of the time wheneven they open their mouth to speak, then they are 35% ahead of the game. I can say that in Eric's case, he shot for a much higher percentage than 35 and it worked.
More than anything else, it is the awareness of how they sound when they are talking that is going to make their 'new' voice a habit.
Congratulations Eric! |
