Stop Yelling; Try Projecting
October 24, 2008

Greetings,

Today I spoke to a woman and was very concerned when she told me that as a minister in the Pentecostal style, she no longer has the ability to sing because of the yelling she has been doing in her preaching.

I listened to some of her videos on her website and I was appalled at what I heard.   Sadly, the damage she has already done can never be undone.  She will never sing again which is difficult for her to accept because she loves to sing.  By placing so much strain on her vocal folds (cords), she is doing constant damage to those folds and I predict that if she continues in the same manner, she will lose all of the volume in her voice (if not her voice completely).  The result will be a very raspy, harsh sound that will have no volume increase potential.

It is such a shame that some of these ministers are hurting themselves when, if they would just learn to breathe and use their chest to power their sound, they could avoid the pain, the damage, and the overall loss of quality of their speaking voice.

In addition, they would discover much more energy at the end of the day because yelling takes a lot of work -- projection doesn't.   How simple a breath can be!
